SCSU became one of America's leading astronomical institutions, thanks in part to their donations from Dr. Cushing and others in the entertainment industry. During World War II, USS Constitution Museum member USS Paine furnished many US Navy submarines with Gifts From The Sea collectibles made by local jewelers such as Tiffany & Co., Sears Roebuck & Company,and Wernher von Braun's company ICM Radio Corporation among others for use aboard Naval submarines during wartime patrols off Japan and China coastline respectively
