Brentwood is located about 22 miles (35 km) east of downtown Los Angeles and is bordered by the cities of West Hollywood to the north and Culver City to the south. The area now known as Brentwood was first populated by Native Americans who called it "Chiave" because of its high altitude and fertile soil. In 1871, artist named Nathaniel Hawthorne bought land in what would become Brentwood and began developing it into a fashionable community for white people. He named his development "Hawthorne Heights", after himself and his home in Massachusetts. By 1920, most of Hawthorne's original houses had been destroyed by fire or vandals but he had continued to build new ones on more acreage around his old home. By 1930, Brentwood had over 100 homes and businesses with a population of over 1,000 people. The town prospered through World War II thanks to its strategic location near airfields that served Southern California during the war effort – including Signal Hill Air Force Base – as well as its important role in organized crime during this time period. After the war ended, Brentwood experienced an increased focus on residential development due to empty industrial sites newly available in L.A.'s rapidly expanding suburbs; however, it retains much of its rural character today with many small farms still dotting its landscape

However, during World War II the town experienced a decline due to its proximity to Los Angeles; nevertheless, Brentwood continued to be an important center for government and business during this time period. During the 1960s and 1970s Brentwood saw growth again thanks to new construction that occurred in downtown area (the first phase of which culminated with The Beverly Hillbillies’ movie production company setting up shop there), as well as increased immigration from Mexico and other parts of Latin America who commute into Los Angeles for work or study purposes. This growth led Toombs Properties Trust Company Limited (TPTC) - which owns most of downtown - to rename itself "Brentwood Plaza" in 1979 following fresh investment from then-Mayor Ronald Reagan's administration while he served as governor of California
