Brentwood is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the north side of the city limits and has a population of over $100 million as of 2018. Brentwood was founded by Englishman H. J. Brent in 1893 as a small farming community after he purchased 160 acres (60 hectares) of land from George Eastman. The area now includes much of what is now Brentwood Village, with the main shopping center being located on Wimpole Street between Hampden and King Streets. The first post office in Brentwood was established in 1892, and the first store opened its doors in 1896. In 1907, Harry Slatkin developed Brentwood into an upscale town with wide streets and expensive homes built by him and his friends. The population exploded when movie stars began to arrive in Los Angeles during the silent era, making Brentwood one of the most popular areas for film production around those times. More than 2,000 businesses are clustered around West Hollywood Boulevard through which many celebrities passed each day during their movies shoots or visits to Universal Studios Chicago or other nearby studios during that time period. The very first deployment of a navy ship was in 1775 when USS Constitution sailed from Portsmouth, New Hampshire with supplies and reinforcements for the Continental Army. This was also the first time that a navy ship had been used in combat. The USS Constitution later served as flagship of Commodore James Cook’s exploring Expedition to Australia in 1820-1822. The USS Constitution also played an important role during World War II. It was one of four ships that carried Admiral Ernest J. King’s sea forces which invaded Normandy, France on D-Day in 1944. After successfully landing his troops, Admiral King ordered the USS Constitution to fire upon German targets ashore by firing rockets from its turrets into homes and churches located near Omaha Beach. In addition, the USCG played an important role providing support for Naval Air Station Long Island (LIT) during Operation Neptune’s Spear, which were two major amphibious landings conducted by U.S Marine Corps units against Nazi Germany at Anzio beachhead on Italy’s Mediterranean coast on June 6-8, 1944; and Operation Market Garden, which aimed to cut off supply lines between British and Dutch forces along European Axis territory north of Amsterdam Harbor. After World War II ended, many naval vessels were decommissioned or mothballed due to budget cutsbacks within the military service but few warships were retired outright like USS Constitution did after her active duty career ended in 1946; she instead became a museum ship at Mare Island Naval Shipyard until being sold for scrap in 1984).
