Brentwood is a small city in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1892 by cattle ranchers who named it for their ranching property near Brentford, England. The city's population was 28,811 at the 2010 census. Brentwood has been called "The Garden City" because of the many green spaces and high-quality schools that make it one of the most affluent communities in Southern California. Brentwood is located on a rolling hill between two valleys and its downtown area contains several large shopping malls as well as several colleges and universities. The city is bounded by Riverside Drive to the north, Santa Monica Boulevard to the east, and Vernon Avenue to the south. Its ZIP code 90212 includes parts of Sherman Oaks and West Covina. The first people known to live in what is now Brentwood were Native American traders from what is now nearby Malibu who traded with Mission Indians before moving westward along present-day Interstate 5 in search of new land to settle. In 1842, Capt. George Hearst established Rancho Palos Verdes here onoughtland which included much of today's Brentwood neighborhood including what are now Hearst Park, Elysian Fields and Canoga Park neighborhoods northeast of route 101/Interstate 5 (the eastern border of which remains largely unaltered today). In 1892, John Hays bought part of Rancho Palos Verdes from Capt George Hearst; he renamed it Brentwood after his home town in England where he had been born in 1846. At first just a few scattered homes dotted a wide stretch of open country northwest of downtown; but by 1915 over 100 homes had been erected around what is now Worth Street SW between Lankershim Boulevard and Diamond Row Streets NW (then simply Lyndhurst Road), making Brentwood one of Los Angeles' largest planned cities since Manila during Spanish rule when there were only about 25 or 30 residents living there according to historian Jerry Izenberg’s book “Los Angeles: A History” published in 1981 although this number did not include areas such as North Hollywood which became partofthecityin 1907 following annexation by Beverly Hills followed by Culver City annexed by Angelenos after World War I which also added thousands more residents over time! Brentwood, California is a small town located in the Los Angeles County area of Southern California. The population was 23,569 at the 2000 census, making it the second-largest municipality in Los Angeles County after Culver City. The name Brentwood is derived from the Adobe Walls rancho which was once part of Rancho La Brea. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Brentwood were farmers who came overland from Mexico during the gold rush period. In 1847, Colonel George Morrison organized an expedition to find a better place for his cattle operation and he discovered and bought 640 acres of land east of downtown Brentwood on October 12, 1847. He named his new rancho Adobe Walls after one of his old army units that had fought against Mexican forces in 1846-47. The first post office opened in Brentwood on April 15, 1850. On November 1, 1870, a branch line was built west to Monterey Oaks and then north to North Hollywood; this made it possible for people living near Beverly Hills and North Hollywood to get mail without having to go all the way down into Los Angeles County. By 1880, there were over 100 businesses in Brentwood with several thousand residents! During World War II many local businessmen took up arms against fascism and helped support America's war effort by rationing goods and working as truck drivers or mechanics. After the war ended many local businesses closed down while others became associated with various regional companies such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (now Lockheed Martin), Western Electric Company (now Comcast), Pacific Gas & Electric Company (now PG&E), Ford Motor Company (later Kaiser AG) and ABC Television Network Headquarters before being sold off or merged into larger companies such as Disney/ABC Productions Inc., Time Warner Entertainment Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Polycarbonate Corporation etc.. In recent years much development has taken place within the boundaries of Brentwood including: a large shopping mall called "Brentwoods Place" which anchors Interstate 5 between Highland Park Boulevard and Baldwin Avenue; new housing developments such as "Homespun Row" around University Drive; an outpatient clinic called Cedars-Sinai Medical Center which provides healthcare services primarily to low-income residents in nearby Gorman Heights; significant changes are also taking place inside of Adobe Walls itself with plans for a mixed use redevelopment that could see mixed income housing developments alongside luxury condominiums or apartment buildings – much like how LACMA functions today!
