The Buena Park Army Base has been the home of the United States Military for over 160 years. It is a cultural, historical and financial center for the Los Angeles area. The U.S. military presence in Buena Park began with Fort MacArthur in 1846 and grew rapidly during World War II as it was known as "the Training Center of the West". After the war, Buena Park became one of the largest army installations in California. In 1969, President Nixon announced that Fort MacArthur would be closed and all enlisted personnel would be transferred to Camp Pendleton on San Diego Bay. The base was renamed Camp Roberts after General George Custer, who died at Battle Creek Indian Reservation in 1892. Today, Camp Roberts is home to more than 11,000 active duty military members and their families and is also used for training cadets from across the nation for future service in our armed forces. Buena Park, California is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 54,765 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Orange County and the second-most populous city on the Central Coast of California after Santa Ana. The first permanent settlement in what would become Buena Park dates to 1887 when Hacienda San Diego de Alcala owners Miguel Alvarado and Antonio Maria Costa erected a small adobe rancho on what is now Old Mission Road. A year later, they donated land to build a civic center and park which became known as "The Park." The name Buena Park was chosen by referendum in 1912 because it sounded like Spanish words meaning "beautiful." The City of BuenaPark was incorporated on February 14, 1916 with a population of 707. On December 20th of that same year, post office operations began at the new location off of State Route 91 (now Broadway). In 1934, fire destroyed much of downtown but did not damage or destroy all of the commercial buildings; instead only two were lost including one that still stands today called “the old Post Office” which remains an important part of downtown’s architecture. In 1935 construction began on what would become City Hall which was completed in 1939. That same year also saw the opening of America’s first movie theater – The Americana – located just east of City Hall across from Latham Square shopping mall. In 1949 First Union National Bank moved into its current building across from City Hall and continued business until 1987 when it merged with Jardine & Matheson Bank to form Jardine Matheson Bank USA Incorporated. Finally, in 1984 First National banking Corporation vacated their building across from City Hall (renamed Citibank Plaza) and moved into their present building next door where they continue business until this day as a full bank subsidiary within Chase Manhattan Banks Incorporated

The city’s population increased from 9,000 to 50,000 during the 1920s and 1930s as waves of Mexican immigrants arrived to work in American factories. During World War II, Buena Park played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center for Southern California. After the war, Buena Park experienced an increase in development along its north-south streets with new businesses and homes coming up aroundthe clock. Despite this growth,Buena Park remained a small town until the early 2000s when it started to experience a rapid influx of people from South Central LA Combined Statistical Area (CSA). This migration has led to significant changes within the community including increased educational opportunities for residents and an overall increase in density on its east-west streets.
