The Buena Park Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services to the city of Buena Park since 1912. The Coast Guard Station is responsible for a variety of functions including patrols, search and rescue, maritime security and coastal defense. In addition to its duties as a law enforcement agency, the Coast Guard Station also provides humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The station was founded on December 12, 1912 by Captain John L. Stevenson with the goal of helping to protect the city from potential danger at sea. The first coast guard officer at the station was Lieutenant Harry Potter. At that time, Buena Park was an unincorporated community located north of downtown on Harbor Boulevard. Laws were passed in 1915 changing the name of the station from Harbor Boulevard Naval Base toBuena Park Coast Guard Station after Buena Park became an incorporated city within California. Captain Harry Potter served as Commanding Officer from 1916-1920 In 1923, Captain Arthur Auer assumed command of the station after Captain Harry Potter’s departure for military service in World War I WithCaptainAuerincommandthestationatthe peakofitspowersduringthe 1920sand 1930s During World War II,CaptainFrankMillerheldthecommandofthestation until his retirement in 1945 In 1951 Commander George Wernham took over command from Commander George Wernham Jr., who had served as Commanding Officer during World War II In 1966 Commander Jack Kappenberger took over command from Commander Jack Kappenberger Jr., who had been commanding officer during World War II Since then there have been five commanders with Assistant Commanders leading each shift while Headquarters oversees all activities at the station . The present day Coast Guard Station opened its doors on September 25th 1954 when Commodore Willis Hodge relieved First Mate Leroy Slingerstrom following his death at sea while serving aboard USS Constitution (LCS-2) off Californian Island . Commodore Hodge stated “I am glad that we can open this new era for our Department by having someone take charge who knows what he is doing” In 1965 Commodore Darryl Juhl relieved Commodore Jack Kappenberger Jr., who had taken over as acting commander due to ill health . With Commodore Juhl in command operations began smoothly . From then until his retirement in 1986Commodore Bob Osterberg led operations ..... In 1987Commodore Don Armstrong replaced him with Acting Commander Fred Pohlman giving us our current facility We are grateful for Fred Pohlman’s leadership and look forward to continue enjoying his services into future years
