Buena Park, California is a city in Orange County, California, United States. It was founded on July 15, 1907 by Edwin Buena and his wife Anna Maria de los Angeles. The city's population was 161,912 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to Anaheim and Santa Ana. The first residents of Buena Park were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1821. In 1907, Edwin Buena and Anna Maria de los Angeles founded what would become known as Buena Park after they purchased land from the La Fortunata Oriental mission complex east of Anaheim. The name "Buena Park" was chosen because it sounded like an English word meaning "beautiful place." According to the City of Orange website: "Edwin Buena wanted a plaza in which people could gather for fun and exercise without being influenced by commercialism." He also believed that such a plaza would be a catalyst for cultural change in Orange County. Central Avenue served as the first permanent public Nuestra Señora del Carmen church (later renamed Our Lady of Guadalupe) on May 14, 1908; the building now stands as part of cathedral square. In 1912, two years after incorporation as a town, Buena Park annexed adjoining unincorporated areas including parts of east Anaheim and west Santa Ana due to concerns about annexation by neighboring cities with similar populations and development plans. At the time these annexations were made it was one of only two towns in Orange County without an election to determine its boundaries; the other being Garden Grove which had been organized earlier that year. Despite intense personal opposition many Town Meetings continued thru 1915 until finally called off due largely to lack of consensus over future programmatic direction following revelations made public circa 1915 By 1916 both Garden Grove & Boonville had incorporated so City Limits would no longer apply retroactively affecting those towns !! This sudden end to hostilities Within buENA PARK came as quite some surprise given prior history Of even greater fierceness & intensity between competing factions As portrayed In recently reprinted History Of Irvine Co., Volumes 2-4 ." Buena Park is a city located in San Diego County, California. It was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The area now comprising Buena Park was established as a rancho in 1887 by Antonio Encinas and Purisima Krieger. The name "Buenas Park" was given to it by Englishman named Edward Bueno, who visited the area in 1885. In 1908, the City of San Diego annexed part of Buena Park, creating what is now known as Downtown San Diego. In 1933, Mayor Elmer Robinson designated the eastern side of town as an open-air park called Playa Mesa Municipal Airport. Today, most of downtown Buena Park is contained within the boundaries of University Towne Centre which also contains a large shopping mall and office buildings. A small portion extending into La Jolla has been annexed by Vista Linda since 1988 and became known as Mission Valley
In 1821,Buena Park was founded by Captain Manuel Nieto and his wife María de la Concepción. The area that is now Buena Park was part of the Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant. In 1835, the real estate agent José Gomez sold the first piece of land in what is now Buena Park to Francisco Pico for $2,500. The first post office in Buena Park was established in 1838. It was called "Casa Grande." In 1865, a millinery business started up on Menard Avenue and it remains one of the oldest businesses in Buena Park today. In 1886, the first telephone line arrived in town and it ran along el Camino Real. Switched to copper wires in 1888, phone service became available through teléfono celular (cellular phone) when Grupo Radio Tél Vidrio bought out America Telegráfica's share of telephone lines in 1923. A Presbyterian church built on East Santa Fe Drive was dedicated on December 15, 1924 as part of a larger church construction project initiated by Mayor Ricardo Jiron and funded with donations from local businessmen and women. The cornerstone for the church can still be seen today at 5th Street & Katella Ave.. The original pastor who led worship there was Revd’ Henry Hickenlooper who served until 1951. There have been many pastors over the years including Revd’ Harry Misener who has been serving since 1984;Revd’ John Aiken who has been serving since 2006; Revd’Keith Weems Jr who has been serving since 2009-2010;and currentlyRevd’ Luis Ramoswho will be officiating services this Sunday!
