On October 15th 1893, Manuel Nieto died when his horse got lost while racing near Highland Avenue and Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Buena Park; he had been elected governor that year but did not serve because he had no residence in state capital Monterrey. The land that is now Buena Park was first donated to the city by Pershing Square Developers in 1923. In 1925, the city built a park on the site. The park became a popular place for locals and tourists to visit, and it was also used as a training ground for American soldiers during World War II. In 1949, Anaheim annexed Buena Park, and the two neighborhoods became one.
