Burbank is a city in the western United States. The population was 96,821 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Los Angeles County and Ventura County. The name "Burbank" first appeared on a map in 1881, when it was called North Hollywood. The name may have been given to the area by Burbank residents who wanted to suggest that their town be near Paramount Pictures, then part of Universal Studios. In 1907, Paramount merged with its rival Vitagraph Studios to become one powerful company. That year, North Hollywood changed its name to Burbank and it has remained that way ever since. Today's Burbank is built primarily on agricultural land that was once used for farming and grazing animals; however, development has brought about many new businesses and residences over the years.
