The city's name comes from its location on a canal that connected nearby San Gabriel Valley to downtown Los Angeles. Burbank began as a small farming community with only about 100 residents in 1890. Burbank is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 73,043 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Beverly Hills–Los Angeles metropolitan area. The city was founded on October 4, 1909 by John Sutter and his partners in the San Gabriel Valley entrepreneur community of southern California. Burbank became one of the most significant economic engine-heads in Southern California during its early years. The first permanent settler in what would become Burbank was Manuel Nieto, who arrived on February 14, 1907 from Mexico with his family and two oxen to trade for goods being sold by Sutter and his partners at their new site known as "Valley Bar". John Sutter named the town after himself – he had been born near Yuma, Arizona Territory on October 4th that year and moved with his parents to Pasadena when he was five years old. In 1910 Sutter partnered with Maurice Blythe to purchase 640 acres (250 ha) northeast of downtown Burbank from Professor Harry Doheny for $15 per acre ($140/ha). This land would eventually become what is now Northridge Park Boulevard and Northridge Avenue. On May 15, 1912 Mayor George Norris proposed that Angelenos vote on whether or not they wanted an incorporated town within their city limits; only 5% voted against incorporation but it set off a firestorm among those who felt they had already done too much for their city-owning homey brethren west of E Street (now downtown LA). In 1916 William Randolph Hearst donated 160 acres (60 ha) north of town to be used as a nature reserve; this parcel would eventually form Hearst Ranch which includes today's Hollywood Cemetery. After years of wrangling between eastside residents wanting annexed into Burbank while westside homeowners desired exclusive use of the Reserveland through voting rights contests and other means, annexation finally happened on November 15th 1922 when City Council passed an ordinance granting all eastside addresses within seven miles (11 km) of downtown property ownership access to Burbank services without having to go through annexation proceedings like others within the city limits. Burbank enjoyed its early growth until World War II when many businesses closed due to wartime shortages such as aluminum cans which were difficult to produce without smelting plants in operation across Southern California due to government prohibitionism at that time; however war-time production did help spark important new development such as Northridge Hospital which opened its doors on October 1st 1942 just days before Pearl Harborilitated Japan's attack on America that same day
