Burbank, California is a city in Inland Empire County, California. The population was estimated to be 134,089 at the 2010 census[1] and has grown rapidly since then, reaching its current population of 248,836 in 2018. It is located on the western edge of Los Angeles County and is bordered by Pasadena to the north-west and Anaheim to the south-west. The city's name comes from two Mexican settlements: Burbankito and Burbank. The first settlement was established in 1848 along what is now Pico Boulevard by few Anglo Californians who were lured by offers of land grants from Mexico City. The second settlement was established about a mile east of where Burbank currently stands in 1853 by some Mexicans under General Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of his campaign against United States forces occupying Mexico.[2] At that time there were few trees or plants because most of what would become Burbank had been burned during previous wars with Mexican settlers. A small stream known today as Lake Coachella ran through downtown until it was diverted for irrigation purposes in 1905. All this began when John Hagee donated 250 acres (10 km2) of his property near present day Pasadena to build an agricultural college which he called Claremont College (later University Of Southern California). Indian Reservation land east of town also played a role in early development with citrus fruits being brought downriver for market in exchange for goods such as ammunition used during the Mexican–American War[3][4]. Although many people think that Downtown Burbank is all Main Street with no side streets or blocks remaining from before World War II, this is not entirely true; one can findside streets called One Hundred Fifties Way Streets leading off from main thoroughfare like Olive Street do exist but they are less well known and harder to find than traditional Main Street street namesakes like Pacific Avenue or Highland Avenue. For example, although Palo Alto Cemetery is located just outside Downtown Burbank boundaries on State Route 91 South it should not be confused with Palo Alto Cemetery on Old Campus Road which lies within Irvine city limits and straddles both county lines - Palo Alto Cemetery sits within Inland Empire County while Old Campus Road sits within Orange County!
The Burbank, California area was first inhabited by the Ohlone people in about 12600 BC. The Ohlone were a Native American tribe that lived in Southern California. In 1821, the United States acquired California from Spain for $12 million. The area became part of Mexico when it gained independence from Spain in 1846. In 1868, the portion of California east of the Sierra Nevada became part of the United States after a referendum vote by citizens of those areas. In 1909, Burbank was incorporated as a city and named for Abraham Lincoln burbank (1809-1865), an American politician who served as Mayor of Chicago during the mid-19th century and then as Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant (1873-1885).
