Burbank, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 153,823 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after City of Angelenos. The name "Burbank" originated from the Spanish word for "bark". The first permanent settler in Burbank was John Sutter in 1847. He acquired land on Buena Park Boulevard and founded the town of Sutter's Fort on October 16, 1848. In 1851 Sutter and his wife Elizabeth stocked up on goods they had brought overland from San Francisco and named their new settlement English Bay after their native countryman who had fought for independence from Spain. In 1888, J.P. Morgan invested $1 million in what became known as the Central Pacific Railroad which connected Los Angeles with Sacramento via Burbank. The completion of this railroad allowed cities such as Pasadena and Beverly Hills to grow rapidly northward into southern California while Burbank languished back at its original location near downtown Los Angeles
