Burbank, California is a city in southern Orange County, California. The population was 81,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Palmdale- Burbank line and is adjacent to Anaheim and San Bernardino counties. The first Europeans to visit what is now Burbank were Spanish Franciscan friars who named it Rancho Santa Anita after their rancho (holding) in central Orange County. A survey of Jan 1, 1781 by Captains Cook and Botkin found "Rancho Los Nietos" with an area of , three miles long by two miles wide. The land was given to Manuel Nieto as part of Rancho San Jacinto which included much of what is now Anaheim, Garden Grove, Fullerton and Yorba Linda. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico granted Partidario Adobe Grant to José Arguello for his service against Spanish forces during the Californio War (1846-48). This grant covered most of present day Compton and parts of Reseda and Carson City east of Pasadena including present day Burbank. In 1850 John Sutter founded Sutter's Fortnum & Mason store on Mayflower Street in downtown Burbank; this location would become home to many later businesses including Pacific Gas & Electric Company Headquarters Building (now known as One UCLA Plaza), Matsushita Electronics Corporation Headquarters building (now known as Panasonic Tower), ABC TV Broadcasting Company Headquarters building (now known as the El Monte Municipal Utility District Administration Building), Warner Bros./Blue Sky Productions Laboratories film studios complex (now know as Time Warner Center), Staples Store headquarters building (now known as Union Square Tower) and much more throughout its various incarnations over time.
