Because Alcalá had also helped found Florence, Italy in 1802 – making him one of Northern California's earliest European arrivals – many Californios considered him a hero for his actions inCalifornias independence from Mexico. On October 15, 1847, while under way to visit San Diego with his forces fighting against Santa Ana's forces at Presidiouvarraposa Creek just south ofpresent-day Glendale Heights Cemetery (), Alcalá's ship La Bahia ran into trouble offthe coast of Point Mugueros (); two sailors drowned as a result and La Bahia became stranded onshore until it could be towed back to Alcala by sea;[1] this event are generally considered to be the beginning of Burbank's history.[2][3] In 1850s many small businesses opened up around Mission Bayou including several tanneries (now known as City Hall Building and Western Manufacturing Co.)
