Burlingame, California is a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It is located on the shore of Burlingame Strait and has a population of about 90 people as of the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1887 by wealthy businessman George W. Smith and his wife Lucy Stone. It became an incorporated town in 1914, after it was chosen as one of five towns to be part of the new City of Berkeley. The community's name comes from John Burrland, who settled there in 1827. The first settler in Burlingame was George Wetherbee, who came to what is now Burlingame Strait in 1847 with his family. He built a cabin on Guard Island for himself and nine other families, but he never lived there permanently because he died soon afterwards. His son Sam Dutton also moved to Burlingame in 1850, but he died young at age 25 from natural causes. His daughter-in-law Lydia Bogan took over her father's land and built a house on guard island for herself and her four children; she married David Starr Jordan later that year. The first post office at Burlingame was established on May 10, 1887, by George Wetherbee Jr., with Lillian Egan serving as clerk; it closed down on July 15 due to lack of mail traffic. In 1914, the City of Berkeley merged with several other townships within Northern California to form the new city of Oakland; however,Burlingame remained an annexed town until 1978 when it became its own independent municipality again under Measure R (1978). In 1990, after years of discussion between its residents and local government officials,Burlingamo voted to secede from Oakland altogether and become an unincorporated community once again under Measure T (1990). Today, Burlingamesiders continue to call themselves "Burbankites." Today's economy revolves around agriculture and real estate; although some manufacturing still takes place hereabouts such as fabricating furniture or producing flooring products for export outside North America (particularly China), most businesses have relocated elsewhere since 2000 when Silicon Valley boomed following dot-com busts throughout much of that decade led by then-CEO Steve Jobs' company Apple Inc.. Although some semblance remains thereof - including longstanding burbling creek known locally simply as "the stream" - many storefronts have been replaced by high-rise buildings along State Route 1A since those days when Main Street ran east/west instead like so many arteries within today’s sprawling metropolis...
