When Fort Ord closed its gates in 1908 because it became surplus property due to advancements made in aviation technology, much of what remained ofArmy garrison infrastructure including artillery ranges and tents were used by World War I marines who established Camp Elliott some miles away on Castle Beach Road beginning on July 1st 1915 until it replaced Elliott on November 8th 1917 as Marine Barracks #2 within Fort MacArthur (now known as Golden Gate National Recreation Area). The city is founded by European Americans in 1853 as a small farming community named after John Burlingame, an American Revolutionary War general and politician. The city was renamed for General James K. Polk in 1881. It became a town in 1906 and was incorporated as a city in 1948. The population of Burlingame was 1,815 at the 2010 census. The history of Burlingame can be traced back to 1853 when Europeans arrived in what is now California looking for new land to settle and grow crops. In that year, captain John Brougham of the British India Company set out from Portsmouth, England with his family and four others to explore the area that would become California. They arrived at Point Reyes Station on March 25th and established a trading post called Fort Point Reyes until they were forced out by Native Americans about two months later. Captain Brougham's group went on to establish various other posts along the coastline before eventually being expelled again by the Indians about 1857-58. In 1851, Patrick Madden set out from Dublin, Ireland with his brother John Madden to purchase Rancho Rinconada near Monterey Junction from José Nieto de Encinas y Costilla for $8,000USD$. By 1860, their son Christopher had acquired additional land east of Rinconada which he named Rancho Santiago de la Cruz del Monte while Madden continued to develop Rinconada into one of northern California's most prosperous agricultural communities during this early period of its growth. The Madden brothers are buried at Calvary National Cemetery just outside of town on Highway 37 just south of State Route 101 where also lie grave markers for other early settlers including Lorenzo Sanchez (1820-1892), Manuel Nieto (1815-1882), Aarón Ortiz (1799-1875), Francisco Ramos (1780-1860) and Joaquin Gomez (1784-1863). On January 20th 1850 – one day after gold was discovered on February 2ndnear modern day King City – Juan Crespi organized a party consisting Of 50 men under his command northeastward overland across salt water Creek’s bed leading thence up Mount Diablo through hills watered by brackish creeklets down into Sacramento Valley then all around today’s Sacramento county northward past these same hills over Redwood Canyon onto US Woolsey beachhead where treasure seekers first found nuggets some 6 inches long off shore off North Beach Head sometime between 1865 & 1870 according some sources but never collected any nuggets or any part thereof ever since! About 5 miles further still along those same route over sandbars parallel toshore striking inland today’s Egg Harbor Township beach began another party Sept 10th 1863 led chiefly by Capt Jno Hickey who captained USS Dolphin “Dolphin II” commanded by Lt Comdr Wm SibleyDDG whose shipwrecked crew were successfully salvaged Jan 12 1865 off Shark Island! Those brave pioneers first found valuable goods aboard HMS Dolphin including anchors chain letter key spades knife nails powder horn mirrors etc., even more recently archeologists have discovered artifacts dating back as far as 9500 BC including evidence stone tools bone points arrowheads
