Burlingame, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,554 at the 2010 census. When European settlers arrived in California in the early 1800s they named this area "Borrego Mesa." In 1849, General Winfield Scott decided to name the new Californian state after General James K. Polk because he felt that American soldiers could not be successfully fought without local support. So on July 6, 1849, General Scott's order read "Borrego Mesa adjoineth San Francisco Bay." This name stuck and today Burlingame refers to both Borrego Mesa and San Francisco Bay as its own entity - much like London does for Thames River . On January 1st 1861 when Burlingame became a city it was incorporated as part of an act by the State of California which gave cities such as Oakland and Emeryville their own form of government separate from county government The first post office opened in Burlingame on February 17th 1860. It was established at what is now 2nd Street and Avenue W., under the name of Valentine Post Office In 1865 burlingame had a population of only 100 people but through hard work by its citizens it quickly grew into one of Contra Costa County’s most vibrant cities with over 50 businesses and more than 10,000 residents by 1870 In 1885 City Hall was moved from Valentine Road to Main Street where it remains today In 1916 during World War I burlingame served as an airbase for United States forces operating out of Morro Bay Naval Air Station(now Joint Base Lewis-McChord). Burlingame is located in San Mateo County, California on the Peninsula of Northern California. The town was founded by Captain John D. Sloat in 1853 and first named "Dolphin" after a local sea turtle. It was renamed to its current name of Burlingame in 1877 when it became part of the United States. The history of Burlingame can be traced back to early days when settlers arrived in what is now San Mateo County. Captain John D. Sloat, who settled the area, named the town Dolphin after a local sea turtle because he thought it would be a valuable trading post for salt water fish that could not be found closer to shore. The first person to live in Burlingame was Mrs. Elizabeth Morse who arrived with her husband and four children in 1795. Burlingame was founded in 1868 by Captain James H. Burlingame and his wife, Jane. The town was named for the rolling hills of the area. In 1870, Burlingame became an incorporated town with a population of about 150 people. On December 12, 1872, the first post office in Burlingame opened its doors. In 1881, the California and Nevada Railroad came to Burlingame and began providing transportation to and from San Francisco. In 1902, business owners John Sutter and David Dudley developed a citrus industry that would soon provide jobs for many people in the town. The growth of the industry led to increased traffic on the road which caused problems for drivers who could not handle the added demand. In 1916, when World War I ended, many construction workers returned home and started their own businesses in what is now known as downtown Burlingame. In 1923, Mayor William Kieft established a park in downtown that would become one of the most popular spot in town for locals and tourists to enjoy views of Mount Diablo from across Lake Merritt. The park also served as a community center where meetings were held about local issues and anything else that seemed important at the time. In 1951-1952, development occurred near downtown that would change how people viewed Burlingame; this period is called "The Golden Age." This period saw large job openings at California State University (CSU) Northridge which led to new development around campus including apartments and other types of housing developments which helped make downtown more vibrant than ever before. The economy hit hard during The Great Recession beginning in 2007-2008 but has since recovering somewhat thanks to entrepreneurship among residents as well as investment by businesses within walking distance of DowntownBurlington
