Burlingame is a small town in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula east of San Francisco and south of Oakland. The name "Burlingame" means "place where the willows grow". The first European to visit what is now Burlingame was Juan Bautista de Anza in 1769. He named it after his home province of Burgos, Spain. The first permanent settler in what is now Burlingame was John Cranch in 1868. He built a house on Rancho Santa Clara (now part of Livermore), about one mile from what is now downtown Burlingame. A post office called Fremont had been opened in 1875, but no mail arrived until 1886 when Captain George Wigglesworth sent a letter from Sacramento asking for help with finding new land for settlers to claim. In 1888, Henry Butterfield bought Rancho Santa Clara from Cranch and set out to build an agricultural district that would include present-day Burlingame and other villages around Livermore Valley. By 1898, he had formed the Sugar Company which shipped sugarcane directly from the sugar beet fields near Detroit to California via ship then walked through towns like Martinez and Hercules carrying cargo up river before landing at Yerba Buena Cove on Mission Bay for refinement into refined sugar products ready for export to Europe etcetera In 1906 Money magazine published an article entitled "A Hundred Thousand Dollars: How Some American Business Men Have Improved Their Territories", which described how farming communities like Livermore Valley were changing due to increased production brought on by World War I and Prohibition making money available for businessmen who could find new ways to produce goods It wasn't until much later that people realized they needed water supply so they began building dams across rivers like Coyote Creek just west of downtown upstream from where Coyote Dam now stands

Burlingame is a town in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Spanish word "burlar" meaning to damage or tear apart. It is located on the eastern edge of Oakland, east of Hayward and north of Fremont. The first permanent settler in Burlingame was Francisco Vasquez in 1827. In 1839 it became part of what is now Contra Costa County. In 1853 it became a city and remained so until 1959 when it merged with Oakland to form the current city of Oakland. In early 1800s Mission San Antonio de Atascadero had two missions: one near present-day Pleasanton and one on an island in Lake Merritt (now called Humboldt Bay). On March 17, 1800 Fray Antonio Jose de Lugo y Gomez reported seeing an eagle fly over the head of his brother-in-law José Manuel Herrera during their morning walk nearpresent-day Fremont Boulevard and Lakeshore Drive; he named this location "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora del Huerto". Herrera donated land for a mission on May 6, 1800 by selling his holdings including what is now Mount Diablo Park off Highway 680 south of downtown Burlingame. The Friars builtmission was completed on October 16, 1802 but burned down before they could take possession due to lack of water supply. In 1865–1866 Ignacio Lamas designed and constructed additions to Rancho Rinconada which consist of three stories high redwood walls extending along El Camino Real north to Hearst Avenue west; these walls are still extant as part of Rancho Rinconada today Lamas also developed Lomas Park adjacent to City Hall which became home to Stanford University after that institution moved from Palo Alto in 1906 A post office called Los Angeles opened in 1887 under Postmaster General John Cushing; however, because burlingame did not yet have its own ZIP code, mail was sent back and forth between San Francisco and Los Angeles until 1888 when Burlingame got its own ZIP code . It wasn’t until 1920 that full Metropolitan Area Code operation began with all areas within Contra Costa County placed into one area . In 1978 when Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) started service throughOakland Coliseum StationBurlingame received annexation by BART providing quick access to jobs in nearby cities such as Emeryville BART station
