Burlingame, California is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of Southern California. It is located on the east side of the San Francisco Bay, about 30 miles (48 km) north of downtown Los Angeles. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,959. The name means "bridge over a stream." The first European to visit what is now Burlingame was Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1777. He and his party were exploring what is now Northern California when they sighted land that could only be described as an uninhabitable island with cliffs reaching to heaven. The city's growth continued with many businesses moving into Burlingame during its early years such as Jardine & Fleming Paper Merchants and Waddell Coal Merchants which were both founded in 1885 by Elisha Waddell and Ira Waddell respectively. During World War II, many American military installations were established within or near Burlingame including Naval Air Station Fairfield (now Moffett Field), Naval Surface Warfare Center Sacramento (now Raytheon Terminal High Altitude Area Defense Facility) and Marine Corps Air Station El Toro (now Joint Base Mariana). The city also hosted significant events during the war such as Homecoming Parade on November 10th 1945 with over 100000 people participating followed by parade through downtown on December 3rd 1945 headlined by Gorgeous Betty Ford who came out to perform at Civic Auditorium following her appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show".
