In 1957, John Peet opened his first store in Burlingame that became well known for its excellent Indonesian coffees. The late 1960s saw a shift away from whole bean brewing towards Maxwell House blends (now known as El Sobrante). This often led to tension between newcomers who were not content with their new surroundings or residents who felt they had Outsiders coming into their community without proper appreciation caused resentment which often boiled over into violence or even theft One such case occurred on July 4th 1911 when five Japanese immigrants were mugged near Market Street while working streetcar service out of town; four assailants were arrested but only one native American man caught sight of them and reported it to police before fleeing In 1924 Mayor George Kendall created incorporation for all towns within San Francisco County that did not already have one This act also provided impetus for growth within Burlingame as well as other communities adjacent to San Francisco due to increased access to transportation options being available through incorporation . In 1930 two young men named Ronald Reagan Jr., son of future U.S President Ronald Reagan Sr., were born here; he attended high school here before moving away at 17 years old after getting his GED . Burlingame is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 14,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Burlingame Peninsula and is one of the most recent arrivals to Contra Costa County. The first European settlers in this area were British colonists who arrived in 1776. The town was named after Captain John Burlingame of HMS Discovery, which made an exploratory voyage around Cape Horn in 1802. In 1847, the last of California's Native American tribes living east of San Francisco signed a treaty promising not to attack white people and allow settlement by them. This treaty led to the land grant called Rancho Monterey given to Manuel Antonio de Herrera y Uribe by Governor José Figueroa. In 1853, James Wickersham built Wickerham House as his home at what is now its intersection with Main Street. He served as Mayor from 1865 until 1870; he also served as recorder from 1871 until his death in office on December 12th that year. His widow lived there until her death in 1928. On October 16th 1907 a tornado touched down near Wickerham House causing extensive damage and one fatality when a tree crashed through the roof onto the living room flooring leaving deep gables unsupported and resulted in intense personal injury to many people inside and outside including Mrs Wickersham herself who managed to escape uninjured but with significant physical damage which took months to heal (it still affects her today). Wickerham House also became known for its unusual 1926 design by architect George Eastman that featured both walls of glass facing outwards so that passers-by could see items inside without entering or coming into contact with them (the house has been preserved as part of Eastman Hall at UC Berkeley). A fire destroyed much of downtown Burlingame on February 2nd 1904 destroying over 60% of structures including 10 stores/cafes/bars/and two hotels all within six blocks including three main thoroughfares - High Street (now 3rd Street), Broadway (now Mission Boulevard), and McCourtney Boulevard - leaving just one block remaining standing before being completely rebuilt following public subscription funds raised by local merchants Bakewell & Morse along with $5,000 contributed from Augustus Woodward Sr., president of Brown Brothers Harriman who supervised production during World War I; this reconstruction included new streets grid planinf
The first European to visit Burlingame was the Spanish captain Pedro de Valdivia on March 20, 1769. He named the site "San Francisco del Buen Pastor" after his predecessor as governor of New Spain, who had died in 1768. The Presidio of San Francisco was founded by Mission Dolores on November 6, 1824. The townstatus changed from Indian Reservation to Mexican settlement in 1846 when California became a part of Mexico. In 1849, a group of American farmers led by Jesse Winchester changed its name to Burlingame and began growing vegetables and fruits on what is now the east side of Main Street. In 1850 they built a gristmill northwest of the present-day courthouse building; this mill continued until 1907. In 1865 an act providing for public education in California was passed andBurlingame became one of the first towns in California to receive aid from the state government. It remained so until 1906 when it became part of San Francisco County.
