In 1856 President Pierce sent Lieutenant George Cushing to measure "the course and width" of Burrard Inlet so that he could determine if it constituted waters within the limits claimed by Vancouver Island. Burrard Inlet is now called Golden Gate Strait. A post office called Burrard opened on December 1, 1851; it moved to its current location in 1886 after being moved from its original building on First Street between University Avenue and Kerr Avenue (now Menlo Park Boulevard). The town began as a small agricultural community with only thirty residents when it incorporated as a city on March 14, 1912. At its peak Burlingamese had an estimated population of 521 people but this number decreased to 175 by 1930 due to various factors such as World War II military relocation and the birthrate among Asian American immigrants; however Census figures for 1940 show that there are still about seventy-five resident Burlingsamese living in the city today despite their decrease in population numbers during recent decades.
