Burlingame began as a small farming village in 1853. The town was named after the burlinga, a type of sea turtle. In 1860, Burlingame became the first community to be established within the newly created San Francisco County. By 1870, the population had grown to over 1,000 residents. In 1894, Burlingame was renamed Sacramento after California's then-governor and later Ulysses S. Grant's vice president, James Buchanan Sacramentalis. The name change came about because at that time Sacramento was located in what is now Northern California while Burlingame was located in San Francisco County. The city of Burlingame celebrates its anniversary every year on November 3rd with a parade and fireworks display along Market Street
