Burlingame is a small, unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California. It lies on the southern bank of the Sacramento River, west of Menlo Park and east of San Francisco. The community was founded by American soldiers stationed at Fort Point Loma during World War II. The name "Burlingame" is derived from two different sources: one source says that it was named for Captain John Burlingame who served with General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army in Mexico during the Mexican-American War; and another source says that it was given its current name by Colonel George Kerr Burlingame because he discovered an orchard there while hunting game in 1846. At its peak, Burlingame had a population of around 400 people. By 1865, however, the population had shrunk to just 30 due to factors such as railroad construction and other economic restrictions placed on the town by the state government. During World War II, many American soldiers stationed at Fort Point Loma took up residence in what is now Burlingame. The local post office was opened in 1945 and until 1959 it functioned as an Army depot post only serving those troops stationed at Fort Point Loma. In 1959 burlingamesmiths started manufacturing shoes here which remained a key industry until 1978 when production switched to China due to retaliatory tariffs being placed by America against Chinese manufacturers caught engaging in unfair trade practices
