Burlingame is a small town in San Mateo County, California. It lies on the eastern bank of the San Francisco Bay, and is located within the Central Coast Region. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. The first permanent human settlement in Burlingame was established in 1849 by Capt. John Brougham and his party of soldiers as part of an attempt to establish a military post on Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1852, George Stephenson built a steamboat dock on what is now Main Street near where Presidio Boulevard meets Northern State Highway (I-880). By 1870, Burlingame had become an important port for shipping goods eastbound from San Francisco and northward to Alameda County. A cotton gin was built in 1872 and became one of the most successful cotton gin operations in California; it produced over 60% of all cotton grown in that county during its heyday. In 1906, Burlingame became part of the City of San Francisco through annexation by that city. The population increased rapidly after World War II when people moved into the new housing developments adjacent to Interstate 280 or into other areas surrounding Burlingame while commuting to work in downtown San Francisco or other parts of California. However, with suburban development taking hold throughout much of southern San Mateo County during this period,Burlingame's importance diminished over time; its population reached 23,011 by 2000 but declined to 22,898 at the 2010 census. Today much residential real estate has been replaced by office buildings or shopping malls as people commute into downtownSanFranciscoor other partsof California; however some businesses still maintain their presence including two churches and several small shopsserving local markets
