The national guard was first organized in California on February 14, 1861, by Governor George C. Smith. The state of California had become a republic following the Mexican-American War and the adoption of the United States Constitution. On that date, the National Guard was created as an organization to provide security for settlers in what is now Burlingame, California. The early history of Burlingame is unknown but it may have been founded by Jedediah Smith in 1827 as a trading post on the Sacramento River. In 1856, Captain John Sutter settled in Buena Vista and claimed part of Rancho San Rafael Castro forCalifornia; thisclaimed land included present day Burlingame. On July 25, 1860, Captain John Sutter sold his claim to James Irvine who moved his family there from Mexico City on October 11th of that year with twenty horses and three oxen. Captain James Irvine started building a house at 711 First Street on December 8th 1860 which is still standing today (now occupied by the Pacific Gas & Electric Company). He named his new home "Rancho Santa Fe" after his old country estate near TucsonArizona where he had lived before coming to California. After many years of construction and saleinghis property piecemeal throughout Southern Californiahe finally acquired allof Rancho SantaFe including present day Burlingameon January 6th 1875 from Benicia Sanchez de la Garza Forneyvia inheritanceand purchase agreement. It should be noted that General Antonio Lomas y Costilla was also involved with this acquisition as he had purchased approximately eighty percentof La Garza Forney's lands east of San Francisco Bay Area prior to her death on October 15th 1875 . After purchasing Rancho Santa Fe from Benicia Sanchez de laGarzaForneythe CalifornianNational Guard deployed its first unit thereon March 3rd1876 duringthe days leading upto President Hayes' inauguration ceremony at Plaza del Armas west of downtownSan Francisco . At that time there were only a few small towns along the coast; developments began during World War II with growth in shipbuilding and related industries which led to high demand for housing near major ports. The Port of Embarkation opened in 1945 changed how people get around town; it has been described as “the most important development in retailing west of Los Angeles”1 During World War II many local residents volunteered their services with various military units including Naval Air Station Alcatraz (now Treasure Island) where they cooked food for Japanese troops living on-base. Many Burlingames are buried at Arlington National Cemetery including six mayors: Harry Bridges (1922-24), Franklin D. Roosevelt (1945-1948), Jesse Helms (1980-1982), Dianne Feinstein (1983-1987), Jerry Brown (1989-1991). A new shopping center called Regency Village opened in 1987 just north of downtown; this replaced an old warehouse complex which had become too noisy and polluted for shoppers nearby. The City of Burlingame was founded on November 3, 1887 by businessman and politician Julius Rosenwald and his wife Nellie Boren Rosenwald. It grew rapidly due to its location along the Pacific Railroad, which made it an important center for trade in the early years of the 20th century. The railroad helped Burlingame become known as "The Seed City". In 1923, Mayor John J. Daly merged with nearby Menlo Park to form the city of Palo Alto which still exists today. From its incorporation until about 1970, Burlingame was run by aldermen who were elected at large rather than from within their own wards like most cities in California. This system allowed for more democratic decision-making without having to worry about individual neighborhoods being represented or Votes not Counting (Vocabulary). In recent decades, Burlingame has seen several significant growth opportunities thanks to new development around town including many high-end restaurants and hotels as well as new public housing developments such as Crescent Heights Apartments and Hunters Point Village II which have all led to increased population density around town while also creating some challenges such as air quality problems caused by automotive manufacturing activities taking place just outside town limits (Population Density). Burlingame was first settled in 1868 by James L. Burlingame and his wife, Sarah Jane. The town was named for the nearby Forest of Dean, England, where he had been born two years earlier. In 1876, the town's first post office opened. By 1886, Burlingame had a full-time school and 2 grocery stores. In 1912, the city fathers decided to annex neighboring San Ramon and establish a new city hall on downtown streets that would act as a central meeting place for all activities in the community. The annexation referendum was successful and made Burlingame an official city with its own government. The City Council soon realized that it could not handle all the tasks assigned to it by the mayor and city manager; they needed someone who could be their leader and make decisions without interference from those above them. They chose John Cavanaugh as their first mayor in 1917 after he won an election against incumbent William Tingleman with more than 60% of the vote. Under Cavanaugh's leadership, Burlingame rapidly grew into one of Northern California's most vibrant cities with "a robust cultural life" (including several up-and-coming theater companies) Cavanaugh left office in 1951 to become president of University of California at Berkeley but remains deeply involved in UC Berkeley's affairs today
