They built an agricultural station on what is now North First Street and developed it into a commercial center that grew into one of Northern California's leading agricultural towns. The town's name has been changed several times over its history but its core remain unchanged: "Burlingame" is derived from Captain George Burlingame's original name for the place while "Station" comes from landowner John Hutton's donation to Mission San Francisco de Asís (now Presidio) which served as their main outpost at this location prior to 1800).
