The first Europeans to visit what is now Burlingame were French traders and missionaries in 1769-1770. They named their new settlement "Bourbon" after King Louis XV of France. The Town of Burlingame was incorporated on April 15, 1853. The first post office in Burlingame opened on November 3, 1853. In 1862 the Central Pacific Railroad reached Burr Ridge (now part of Menlo Park) and began construction of a line from here east to Redwood City; this made possible the growth of Burr Ridge as an agricultural center and its incorporation as a city on December 5, 1916 by then Mayor Jameson Mapes. In 1915 there were 9 manufacturing businesses with 2 shifts working at the Newmark Rubber Mills; today there are only 4 businesses remaining with 1 shift working at the mills which closed in 2001 due to lack of demand and competition from other local cities in Silicon Valley such as Palo Alto and Mountain View that had built larger factories during World War II for munitions production: Lockheed Martin (1946), Hewlett-Packard (1947), Bechtel Communications Corporation (1948), Western Electric Company (1945). The major employer from 1915 until 2001 was Westinghouse Electric Corporation which produced transformers for power transmission lines across North America before it merged with US Steel in 1999. In 2000 Western Electric became Alcatel Lucent Incorporated when GE bought all assets of Nortel Networks Canada Ltd., making AlcatelLucent one world's largest telecommunications company with over 100 subsidiaries operating around the globe including many fiber optic networks throughout much of Latin America and parts of Asia Pacific including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand

Burlingame, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 26,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Mateo and has been since 1881. The name of the city comes from Englishman John Burlingame who settled there in 1851. The original town site lay within what is now downtown Burlingame and consisted of only a few scattered buildings. In 1872, John Cranch moved his cattle herd from Santa Clara Valley to what is now downtown Burlingame and began to build up an extensive ranchland east of the Caltrain tracks. This growth led to the incorporation of Burlingame as a city on December 3, 1881 by vote of its citizens. Today, downtown Burlingame remains one of the most vibrant areas in all of San Mateo County with many popular restaurants and bars nestled among historic homes dating back to before World War II.
Burlingame is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It was incorporated on March 15, 1887. The population was 12,831 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the eastern edge of Contra Costa County and bordered by Walnut Creek to the north and east, Menlo Park to the south and west, Alameda County to the northwest and southeast. Downtown Burlingame is located at an elevation of 553 feet (179 m). The first settlers in present-day Burlingame were prospectors who came from Emigrant Land in Oregon in 1859. They named their new settlement after John Richardson Burlingame who had been Governor of California from 1849-1852. In 1865,the gristmill that still stands in downtown Burlingame was built by David Crainer for $5 per day. The first post office was established in October 1871 by James Aiken with Wm Hogg as Postmaster; it moved to its current location near Main Street on December 1st of that year. In 1886, local businessman Harry Farnsworth donated land near the modern day elementary school site for a park which would become known as Farnsworth Park. The first use of this land may have been for agricultural purposes but it soon became popular with people because it offered views of San Francisco across Menlo Park Boulevard. By 1907 there were also tennis courts and a swimming pool east of Main Street while north side streets were developed such as Arlington Avenue which ran through central Burlingame before terminating at Ridge Road southwest of downtown. “It has long been realized that city planning cannot be based upon surveys alone but must be constantly adapted to changing conditions; this is especially true when water resources are involved” – City Manager Ralph Moore On May 1st 1912 Burlingame voters adopted a resolution asking the City Council if they should annex neighboring unincorporated areas including Pleasanton which had voted against annexation two years earlier despite owning much more land than either city had ever claimed! This action set off a series of negotiations between both cities over boundary changes until finally on November 3rd 1913 boundary adjustments were made resulting in Pleasanton becoming part of Burlingam
