Calabasas, California is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the banks of the Santa Clara River and its primary industry is agriculture. Calabasas also has a large student population from nearby UCLA and USC. The first Europeans to visit what is now Calabasas were traders travelling down the San Joaquin River in search of new trade goods with Asia. In 1769, Spanish soldiers discovered a group of trees near present-day Calabasas and named them Pico de la Cañada after General José Antonio De San Martín's victory over Mexican troops at Palo Alto on November 8 that year. In 1802, land was granted for citrus farming by Supervisor Nicholas Bachelet to John Sutter. Rancho Cucamonga was organized in 1854 by Ygnacio Vásquez as part of Rancho Los Palos Verdes which extended into much of northern Ventura County and parts of southern Orange County. On February 14, 1870, sections 9 (northwest corner), 10 (southwest corner), 11 (east border) and 12 ( southeast border) were combined to form the current town site when those sections were split off from neighboring Colby Township. The downtown area around State Route 125 experienced rapid growth during World War II as many local businesses became involved in munitions production; such factories closed after the war but have since been renovated and reopened as restaurants or stores. The old munitions plant continues to be used as an open-air market known as "Pappy's Market".
