Calabasas is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 153,569 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Ventura County and home to the University of California, Riverside. The area that would become Calabasas was first settled by the Tongva people before becoming part of Rancho Santa Anita in 1853. The town began as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Sacramento to San Francisco Bay. In 1881, James Haughton donated 8 acres (3 ha) of land for a town site; this tract became known as "Haughton's Addition". The name "Calabasas" was given to it by J.P. Morgan because he saw a tree with live coconuts on it while traveling through Southern California in 1879. In 1889, local businessmen founded the Pacific Electric Railway to provide transportation between Los Angeles and downtown LA; they named their new town after fellow railroad magnate George Westinghouse (the founder of American westinghouse company). In 1925, during construction of Interstate 5, Calabasas Boulevard was routed parallel to I-5 near what is now its southern terminus at Ventura Boulevard just north of Menlo Park; this will soon be followed by Interstate 405 which bypasses neighbouring cities along its length. As development increased around Calabasa Boulevard and I-405, businesses moved into more spacious buildings on both streets – mirroring trends seen throughout much of southern Los Angeles County during this period. By 1970, most residents had left for other parts of LAs metropolitan area or outlying suburbs due to high rents and competition from newly built subdivisions developments around Hollywood and South Pasadena neighbourhoods south of I-10 freeway eastward into Orange County which were quickly absorbing many pioneers who had originally settled in Calabasa when those areas were still primarily rural agricultural areas with few large commercial establishments outside El Monte or Huntington Beach communities east thereof."
