At least six companies manufactured ammunition for both sides of World War II: Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester Firearms), Remington Arms Company (Remington rifles and shotguns), Norma Manufacturing Company (Norma handguns), Smith & Wesson Corporation (Smith & Wesson revolvers), and Browning Automatic Pistol Corporation (Browning BAR pistols). After the war ended, many firms merged or closed down throughout California due to weak market demand for ammunition following the end of hostilities. In 1957, when Calabasa resident Drayton Goode organized a series of pistol pardons across Southern California under then-Secretary OFA Robert J. Kennedy's administration, he knew that handgun gifts would be an important part of his program."Goode believed that handguns should not only be given as presents but also enjoyed by their recipients as a personal favorite," writes historian Loren Wolfson about Goode's initiative."He solicited suggestions from friends and acquaintances about what typesof handguns they might like to receive - examples include Colts®, Ruger™ models®, Beretta® assault rifles®, Thompson submachineguns®, Socom® pistols*, etc." Over 100 individuals responded to Goode's plea for submissions from throughout Southern California within just four months."Many individuals had been surprised when President Eisenhower announced on November 3rd., 1957 that all Americans must have a driver’s license containing at least one photoelectric fingerprint reader by January 1st., 1958!"At this point, handgun gifts had become increasingly popular among Americans..."After President John F Kennedy was assassinated on November 22nd., 1963,...the gun gift trend reversed.""Gift giving returned to its pre-John FKennedy level with almost no public discussion concerning handgun policy whatsoever," continues Wolfson."Many Americans simply stopped giving away handguns altogether...This may have been due in part to historical factors such as increasing calls for stricter gun control laws after JFK's assassination but it is also possible that some citizens simply felt too uncomfortable discussing handgun gifts with strangers living outside their home communities.""It is interesting to note that even though Californians generally react more positively towards gift giving than other states during these times...there has never been any statewide concerted effort led by either state governments or civic organizations promoting universal access to handguns through gifting programs.""

In 1821, Mexican missionaries founded Mission San Gabriel de Asís on the current site of Clarendon Hall. In 1848, parts of what is now Calabasas were annexed by Los Angeles County. During World War II, much of Calabasas was a heavily bombed target due to its strategic location at an intersection of U.S. Route 101 and Interstate 5. The town had more than 20% of all destroyed buildings from air raids during World War II. In 1957, Calabasas became one of two cities in California that were moved from their original county boundaries when Riverside County was created. It has been incorporated as a city three times since then: in 1977, 1990 and 2003). Today, it is one of the most diverse cities in Southern California with a population over 150K people spread across six neighborhoods: North Hills (northwest), South Park (southwest), Midtown (central), Banning (southwest), Clarendon Heights (east) and Oakhurst (northern).
