Calabasas, California (formerly known as Camarillo) is a city in Ventura County, California. The population was 38,461 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Santa Ynez Peninsula, about south of downtown Los Angeles and north of Malibu. In 1824, Rancho San Lucas was established adjacent to what is now Calabasas and became part of the Rancho Adobe Mexican land grant given to José Joaquin Crespo and Vicente Guerrero. The first post office in Calabasas opened in 1827. The name "Camarillo" probably came from an Indian word meaning "shoreline." In 1881, a group of railroad investors bought Rancho San Lucas and moved it to what is now Midway Boulevard near present-day Claremont Avenue in order to build trackage for their new line connecting Los Angeles with Pasadena. When work stopped on the line after only two miles because of difficult terrain, the investors donated their land back to Mexico for use as a military reservation barracks for American troops during World War II. Afterward, most of what is now Calabasas was developed as a result of ranching and farming by Anglo-Americans who referred to it as "the Valley."
