Calabasas is a small city in Ventura County, California. The population was 30,871 at the 2010 census. Calabasas is located on the eastern edge of Santa Paula and shares borders with Pico Rivera to the north and Westlake Village to the east. The name "Calabasas" comes from two Spanish words meaning "calcified lime-stone." The first European to visit this area was Don Diego Lopez de Varga in 1769, while exploring what is now Ventura County. He named a hill he had seen "Lobos Hill" after his horseback servant who drove him around in a cavalcade. In 1810, Colonel John C. Fremont visited this area and called it Rancho Cañon del Norte because of its easy access to water supplies from the Carpinteria River south of present-day Calabasasa village. In 1836, Jesse Lick Observatory began operations in nearby Simi Valley and needed an observatory site for its research into stellar spectra; so bartering agreements were made with local ranchers for land near Slatyoun Reservoir northwest of present-day Calabasasa village. In 1849, James Irvine developed citrus groves on Mission Hills within what would become downtown Calabasasa Village and began marketing fruits directly to consumers in Los Angeles county. In 1901, when Southern Pacific Railway built its line through downtown Los Angeles and stopped at our current stoplight at Fairfax Street/Canyon Road (then Riverside Drive), they also built an old depot across from City Hall which served as their passenger terminal until 1967 when Amtrak took over that function. On January 15th 1945 during World War II Japanese forces bombed southern portions of Ventura County killing many people including many children playing outside on Indian Wells Boulevard between Simi Valley High School & Interstate 5; then againbombing northern portions later that year which destroyed much property including Mission Hills & Downtown CalabASasaVillage; eventually resulting in majority loss of residential areas northward along I-5 corridor where main industries have been since post war decades such as manufacturing plastics etc.; however some considerable amount still remains throughout various neighborhoods within downtown core vicinity today notwithstanding destructive activities by adjacent military installations
