Calabasas is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 117,155 at the 2010 census. Calabasas is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is located on the southern edge of the San Fernando Valley. It is bordered by Pasadena to the north and east, Glendale to the south and west, and Burbank to the northwest. The area now known as Calabasas was first settled by Native Americans in 1769. The first European settlers were two brothers named Gabriel Moraga and Juan Pico who purchased land fromthe Chumash people near present-day Sylmar. They built a cabin there in 1776 while they were waiting for their father to come find them. In 1847, prospectors discovered gold near modern-day Glendale and decided to establish a town here instead of returning home with all their finds. They named it after General José Joaquín de Alvarado who had fought against Mexican troops at Sutter's Mill during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). In 1853, railroad officials decided that what would become downtown Los Angeles would be its business district so they built tracks through what is now Calabasas from Canoga Park eastward. The townspeople started building homes around this time including several churches which are still standing today such as Our Lady of Angels Church (1854), St. John's Episcopal Church (1855), Good Shepherd Catholic Church (1856), Mount Hope Protestant EpiscopalChurch (1857) and Holy Name Greek Orthodox Cathedral (1859). One of the earliest businesses in Calabasi was an ice cream parlor called "Poodle" which opened in 1858 on Pioneer Road just north of present day Covina Boulevard. One reason why this locality became known as "The Dairy Capital Of America" because this was where many dairy farmers brought their cows from upstate New York during those times when transportation was difficult or nonexistent to get milk to markets elsewhere in California. During World War II many local residents volunteered for military service including William Tatum Jr., one of only two black men ever elected into office as a Mayor of Los Angeles City; he served from 1945 until his death in 1978; Blanche Gibson; Mrs.-Edith Smithson who ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor of California in 1958; Milton Herschel - an African American dentist who worked successfully throughout Southern California before running for Congress three years later becoming one of history’s most successful members thereof; Clarence Thomas - Ulysses S Grant’s Associate Justice on the U.S Supreme Court before being confirmed by President George H W Bush - also active locally during that time period serving as Supervisor of Public Works under terms beginning January 1st 1959 until his resignation effective December 31st 1983 due to health concerns following rocketing across country television coverage announcing his intentions not to seek re-election thereby allowing fellow incumbent Art Agnosyon IIITo take over those responsibilities effective January 1st 1984 until Agnosyon’s victory November 3rd 1988 over Democrat challenger Lorena Gonzalez Osorio effectively ended her challenge providing key cultural background shaping much discussion surrounding that year’s general election campaign having been preoccupied with various other issues then Bullitt Avenue between Claremont Boulevard/Atwood Avenue & Green Hills Avenue finally reaching its current course about one block south along Harbor Blvd thence easterly past Lakeshore Drive rejoining former street name again subject matter once more reverting currently back onto original routing

The city was founded in 1853 by the brothers George and David Brown, who were looking to find a place where they could grow crops and live cheaply. The city quickly became a center for agriculture, and it has been home to many important people in California’s history. The first permanent settler in Calabasas was David Potter, who arrived in 1855. Potter worked on an ranch near present-day Calabasas Boulevard. In 1859, he married Sarah Jarrell, who had also come to California from Vermont. The Potters were the first white people ever to settle in what is now Calabasas County. The Potters soon developed a successful agricultural business, and they helped contribute materially to the development of CalabasASoverallity into one of the most prosperous communities in Southern California. They also built several notable homes in town including their current home on Elm Street - which still stands today - and donated land to help create what is now Highland Park Park. The Potters’ successors continued their family tradition of hard work and philanthropy through their descendants until World War II when they retired from farming completely and moved back into their original house on Elm Street after selling it at auction for $1 million dollars (USD). After retirement, the Potters lived separate lives but always contributed financially to charity both locally and nationally. In 1984, they donated all remaining assets of their estate – including 16 acres of private property that still remains within Highland Park Park – to UCLA University as part of its “David Potter Campus System” program honoring their father’s legacy as well as UCLA’s long-standing commitment to education at this community site across from campus (www.ucla .edu/paintthesky/potter).
