In 1848, a group of American soldiers led by Colonel James Wolk discovered gold near modern-day Oxnard and decided to establish a town here instead of returning home empty-handed. The town was founded on April 14, 1849 by Captain Nicholas Longstreet with thirty men under his command at what is now known as First Street and Adams Avenue. In 1851, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill on present day Dock Road which became one of Southern California's most important mills operations until it closed its doors in 1908 due to World War I economic problems; however, portions have been restored and continue operation today as part of nearby Thousand Oaks' agriculture industry multi-billion dollar economy
