Calexico is a city in Baja California, Mexico. It is the seat of the Municipality of Calexico and is located on the banks of the La Conchita River. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2010. The first written reference to Calexico comes from Acatlán de la Rába in 1421. At that time it was known as "Tlaquepaque" or "Xalapa". In 1542 Fray Antonio de Sahagún reported that there were villages here including Tlaxcala and Puebla. The name Calexico probably derives from antelope which have their natural range in this area and thus were thought to be the founders of this community. In 1846 Mexican President José Joaquín Herrera decided to move the capital fromMexico City to Santa Fe because of its problems with malaria and floods caused by rains season. Santa Fe had more space, but Herrera wanted his new capital closer to power sources so he chose Calexico as the new capital. It was not until 1915 when General Emiliano Zapata forced Mexico's secular president Porfirio Díaz into exile and restored Catholicism that San Miguel de Allende became provisional capital after Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas y Jalisco seceded from Mexico in 1913 during Díaz's revolution against Diaz (1898-1902). Diaz moved his presidential palace from Guadalajara to Monterrey in 1903 but his Vice Presidential Palace remained at Calexico until 1938 when it was razed due to air pollution concerns brought about by Standard Oil CompanyTexaco's oil refinery on nearby hillsides. The old city walls still stand today around what used to be downtown; they are part of a historic park now called Zocalo plaza between Constitution Avenue NW and Normandie Boulevard NW where many major historical moments happened such as Año Nuevo (New Year) 1916 celebrations attended by American high commissioner Arthur MacArthur; inauguration ceremonies for both indigenous peoples Carlos Flores Romero (1897-1981) who led a movement for autonomy for Indigenous peoples within Mexican government; and Lucha Libre Mexicana general Francisco Rivera being elected presidential candidate on July 2nd 1920 following an election fought under military occupation with no real immunity since most political leaders lost out either through treason or assassination attempts by right wing factions during these times

It is located on the Pacific coast at the mouth of the Rio Grande. The area now comprising Calexico was first populated by Lenape Native Americans who called it "Kilahaechee". Spanish colonists founded San Diego de Alcalá in 1769 as part of Rancho San Diego del Baja California, which became part of Mission District of San Francisco after Mexican independence from Spain. In 1821, Alcalá was split off from Mission District and incorporated as a town under Spanish naming authority, but this status changed when Californios created their own government in 1848 without consulting Mexico. The town's name derived from its location at the foot of Mount Diablo – an important landmark for travelers on the route between Los Angeles and Sonora that passed through Calexico. In 1850s vineyards were established along the ridges overlooking both coasts; today much of these Vineyard Hills are still in use as agricultural land.
