Calexico, California is a city located in Baja California, Mexico. The population of the city was 81,868 as of 2010. It is the most populous municipality in Baja California and second most populous municipality in Mexico after Tijuana. The name "Calexico" means "calcium mine." The first discovery of calcium deposits in what is now Calexico was made by José Joaquín de la Hoz (1795-1864) on July 12, 1848 while prospecting for gold near the modern town of Obregon. In 1852 Antonio Portillo y Uribe discovered a saltpeter mine at San Francisco Xavier, south of present day Calexico. In 1863, José Rafael Vásquez and his brother Jesús founded the company that would become known as Mexican Calcium Minesco Ltd., which began extracting calcium salts from local hillsides around Obregon. The mines were built over a period of many years with continued discoveries until 1915 when production stopped because World War I destroyed much Ofablancosilver mining infrastructure; however resumed Production 1945 In 1924 an agreement was reached between United States Steel Corporation and Sociedad Mexicana de Minería y Minas de México to build a steel plant at Pachuca so that Mexican Calcium Minesco could produce high quality steel products for export to Great Britain and other European countries during the 1920s and 1930s. However this project never went ahead due to political reasons related to World War II; however it did lead to construction of the current industrial area adjacent to Pachuca which includes major manufacturing plants such as Ford Motors Company (1925), General Electric Company (1930), Chrysler Corporation (1936), Acme Paper Products Company (1945).

The City of Calexico was founded on December 3, 1881 by Italians who had come to California in search of a fortune. The city's namesake comes from the Spanish word calle, meaning "street." The first settler in the area was Giovanni Battista Cipolla. In 1894, the town was renamed after General Woolridge, and it remained that name until 1898 when it changed back to Calexico. In 1903, the city became part of Mexicali County and in 1919 it became a part of Baja California. On January 1, 1928, Mexican president Agustín Castilla y 2nd announced the creation of what would become known as statehood for Baja California. On January 7th 1930 the federal government formalized this by proclaiming Baja California as a seal of statehood. In 1951, Governor Lorenzo Trueba designated Calexico as one of four major townships within Mexicali Municipality and on October 6th 1957 it became one municipality with its own elected officials including a mayor and sheriff. In 1969 Mexicali Municipality disbanded due to population growth which led to its merger with Tijuana Municipality into new Mexico State Administrative District number 042-2010 on February 14th 1971. On October 21st 1984 KFC Corporation donated land adjacent to their then current corporate headquarters for an open-air shopping mall called "KFC Center". This mall opened officially on November 9th 1986 and is still operational today serving as both a retail center and entertainment venue。 It is also home to San Diego Padres baseball games during regular season and playoffs seasons as well as concerts by various artists throughout the year
In 1879, the California Gold Rush started and quickly led to increased population in the area. In 1886, a water tower was built in Calexico to provide irrigation for surrounding agricultural land. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1916 it had a population of over 20,000 people. During World War II, Calexico played an important role in the war effort as a munitions plant. In 1948, the city became an incorporated municipality with a population of over 60,000 people. Since then, Calexico has seen continued growth and development as an important center for trade and commerce in Central California. In recent years, Calexico has become known for its quality of life and its growing economy which is based on industries such as engineering and manufacturing.
