Calexico is a city in northwestern California, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego metropolitan area. Calexico was founded on November 6, 1882 by Father José Francisco Aguirre and his wife Narcisa de la Rúa y Ortiz as a small post office in Rancho Santa Margarita east of present-day downtown Calexico. The town rapidly developed into an agricultural center due to its rich soil and cool climate. The first commercial institutions were built here in the early 1900s, such as the Sanger Company and First National Bank. By 1925, Calexico had become one of the most important cotton growing areas in California. Calexico is a small city in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 18,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Calexico was José de San Gabriel in 1769; he named it after his birthplace of Calabozo, New Mexico. The area that now includes Calexico was first inhabited by the Chumash Indian tribe and later by the Spanish. In 1821, Mexican independence from Spain was announced and General Mariano Guadalupe Herrera decided to make Calexico the new capital of California. He named it "Pueblo de la Cruz" (Churchtown). In 1848, when California became a state, Pueblo de la Cruz became part of what would become Fresno County. As Californios settled in this area they founded several towns including Mescalero and Bakewell on various hillsides around town. One such settlement, Rancho Rinconada del Sacramento Valley near present-day Tecate Avenue and Loop 810 freeway soon became known as "Calexico". In 1854–55 an American army unit under Colonel John Sutter crossed the Kern River into southern California during its attempt to find a route overland to gold fields in Nevada via Sonoma County and northern Central Valley During their march through central valley they came across Mission San Francisco de Asís (1827) which served as their starting point for further exploration downriver towards points eastward beyond Old Kings Canyon National Park where riches could be discovered hidden inside large granite cliffs called Hornet's Nest (). This startled many local people who were used to seeing only herds of cattle on their doorstep (), so much so that one contemporary writer described this event as "a great national event." Captain George Washingtons forces then continued downriver until they reached Bakersfield October 15th), but no usable Gold had been found yet ......the general opinion throughout America seems to have been that there must be some mistake about this discovery because although immense riches seemed to exist along this banks there could not be enough men or money available to procure them .......() Aftermath: General Washington ordered all horses brought back up river immediately without waiting for reports from camp about whether any significant amount of Gold had been found
