Calexico, California is a town in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 9,389 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Calexico was Don Carlos Romero in 1851. There were intermittent settlers until 1864, when John Sutter came through from Sacramento and founded the city of San Bernardino on his way to found Fresno. In 1881, Los Angeles City Council decided to annex all of Imperial County and name it after General George Custer as part of an effort to promote US westward expansion; at that time Calexico was just a small farming community located about south of downtown Los Angeles. In 1910 Mexican immigrants who had been working on Tomales Bayou near Salinas formed the Socorro Bandanna Lodge No. 8 to help protect their water supply from becoming available to other farmers in Rancho Santa Fe de Tijuana and they named their lodge "Calexico" after their hometown (Caliaxico being one of several towns within Mexico that had been under Spanish rule). In 1916 oil was discovered offshore in Imperial County and by 1918 many people were living around oil rigs off the coast because there wasn't enough land for them all in Lomita Valley; so much so that when Lomita Valley became unincorporated territory following statehood in 1912 it included most of what is now called Antelope Valley plus parts of La Mesa and Downey Heights east of present day Garden Grove Boulevard which are now part of Irvine Beach The original town site occupied mostly by agricultural fields with few buildings or resident families until 1920 when a church and post office were built; then more housing began to be erected as people commute into nearby cities for work or pleasure The last structures standing today date back to 1922 when a two storyanger store, hotel and bar opened on Main Street next door to Cal Expo Museum By 1933 there were only six dwellings left in town center - four churches (Jehovah's Witnesses), one school (Lincoln School) and one movie theater (the Golf Course Theater) but over time new subdivisions have been constructed including: Park View Estates annexed 1965; Northridge Subdivision annexation 1970; Cathedral City Annexation 1980; Crystal Hills subdivision annexation 1990 Today there are only three buildings remaining: Old Courthouse (now used as storage), Lutheran Church & Cemetery (which may be preserved for historical purposes if desired) and Hotel Del Norte which closed down in 2006 . Other defunct businesses include pharmacy Walgreens closed 1984a, ice cream Parleensclosed 1985b & drive-in Steak House closed 1992c ; local radio station KFMB stopped broadcasting 1978d while local grocery store Grocery Outlet Grocery Inc.) continued operation until 1996e While some residents continue traditional ranching activities such as rodeo clowning or playing cowboys & Indians outside municipal limits some others have turned towards high technology based businesses such as Google Earth mapping services or software development firms such as Symantec whose employees live close by providing satellite TV service . As well there are numerous restaurants/bars/clothing stores currently open along Main Street serving up Californian food items like pizza etc.; while internet cafes abound throughout the central business district . Although many residents still retain some aspectsOf Anglo-Saxon culture alive&well[sic]Banana Republic remains open every day except Sundays during summer months offering fresh fruit juices , eggs & bacon etc.; despite competition from fast food chains Pizza Hut & Taco Bell although establishment prices have increased since 2005

It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River. The area that now Calexico was first occupied by the Chumash people in 1824. At the time, it was part of Rancho El Dorado de la Calavera y Tàrrega granted to José Joaquín Moraga and his brother-in-law Manuel Nieto. Jose Antonio Nieto founded Rancho San Miguel de Calexico in 1848 with land grant from Mexican President Porfirio Díaz. A post office called Calexico (later renamed Alta California) was established in 1851, and remained In operation until 1893. The town began as a small community of around 100 residents near what is now downtown Calexico and gradually grew into an agricultural center dependent on irrigation from the Sacramento River. Development accelerated after World War II when new highways were constructed through central California and brought more people to the area; agriculture declined thereafter. However, growth has resumed in recent years due to development along Interstate 5 and other amenities within walking distance of downtown. The original mission of Mission San Francisco Solano had been abandoned by 1795 because of cost overruns associated with its construction; however, parts of its remains remain extant today as part of nearby Cathedral City Cemetery complex which includes one of Californias largest mausoleums – that for former Governor Peralta – also known as alcalde or mayoralty building since 1920 until it burned down in 1989 during protests against his rule preceding statehood ceremonies marking 50 years since his death while still Mayoralty Building’s owner/occupant

On May 1, 1886, Calexico incorporated as a city under the newly created Mexican Republic and became part of Mexico City metropolitan area. In 1912, the city annexed what is now unincorporated parts of Otay Mesa and La Jolla counties to its boundaries. The population grew rapidly after World War II until it reached its peak in 1960 with over 100,000 residents. After adecade-long decline in population growth due to relaxed immigration controls and other factors, Calexico's population peaked again in 2000 with over 120,000 residents
