Calexico is a city in Imperial County, California, United States. The population of the city was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Montebello–Tijuana metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Calexico were Mono people who founded a small village on an earlier site about three miles east of present-day Calexico. They called their settlement "Mendoza". In 1851, Mexican President Porfirio Diaz ordered the withdrawal of all American forces from Mexico and as a result, many Anglo Americans went back into Mexico looking for jobs and land. A group of these men came across two adobe huts that had been abandoned by the Mendozas and decided to take them over as their own home. These men were known as the "Calexicobuilders". One hundred years later, on November 14, 1887, Joshua Hance became one of only six citizens ever to be elected Mayor of San Diego without having run for office before or since then. The town started out as a tiny community near where Interstate 5 crosses HWY 95 today known simply as "Old Town" or simply Calexico because there weren't any other settlements within 10 miles radius at that time; this was also true for much of western San Diego County which was still part of Mexico until 1912 when it became fully U.S. territory under President Woodrow Wilson's famous Tejas Treaty policy change which gave most Mexican Territory its current borders: Rancho Santa Fe (now Riverside), Nuevo Laredo (now El Paso), Channel Islands (Island Harbor), and parts of southern Orange County were annexed by Calexico during this time period; however even during those days there wasn't really anything in between Old Town & modern day downtown because everything north/south OF I-5 was now just open desert wasteland nominally belonging to Juarez Nation but technically administered by Suroyo Land Company which would eventually become part Of City Of Industry In 1912). In 1886 Elisha Pearce built what is now Downtown Square - an area bounded by 2nd St., 3rd St., 4th St., 5th Ave., 6th Ave., Main St./Broadwalk/US 90 Wimer Rd./Paddock Rd./Hwy 395 NW and what would later become University Ave.; he also laid out streets leading away from his square such as East 2nd Street (later US 90) leading towards Ft Buenavista Road & eventually White Sands Missile Range just outside today’s boundaries; main avenues running through Downtown Square at that time included North 1st Street (& eventual Paseo de la Reforma thereafter), South 2nd Street (& eventual Broadway thereafter),East 3rd Street (& future University Ave.), West 4th Street (& ultimately US 90NW)), finally North 5th street (& future Park Drive presently). This early development can still be seen today in some areas such as SW corner 2nd Avenue & 3rd Streets(formerly Main & Elm) currently occupied by several high rise buildings including: The Ballpark Shopping Center with anchor store Macy's; Downtown Plaza with anchor store Sears; 12Th st apartments complex owned by developers Goldenvoice LLC ; new shopping center anchored by Macy's being erected next door off I-5 on Speedway Blvd.; numerous apartment complexes located throughout OldTown sq & adjacent NE side along 21StStreetWalk although not all have been completed yet due to various approvals required from various government entities etc etc...etc...etc......... All told there are approximately 100+ structures standing scattered throughout downtown today comprising about 85% original architecture including many unique features none found elsewhere within thisSIZE region....... This early growth can best be appreciated if one takes a walk around oldtown sq taking in all its sights, sounds & smells dating back more than 125 years..... Calexico was founded in 1885 by four brothers, George C. Calexico, John W. Calexico, and Harry H. Calexico. The first store was located on the corner of First Street and Center Street. In 1890 the company name was changed to The Geo Wagon Works Company. In 1903 the name was changed again to The Geo Wagon Works Company, Inc., and in 1907 it became a publicly traded company with headquarters at 4755 California Avenue in Pasadena, California. In 1929 the company merged with the American Truck Manufacturing Corporation (ATMC) to form ATCM-CALEXICO Corporation (now known as Harley-Davidson).
