The National Guard was originally organized in 1881 as a military force to protect the citizens of Southern California. The Guard has since become an important part of the community, providing law enforcement and security services. The Guardsmen have played a critical role in Calexico’s history, and their contributions are still remembered today. The National Guard first arrived in Calexico on July 14, 1881. At that time, the town had only a few hundred residents and no local militia or national guard. However, the townspeople were willing to put up with some inconvenience for the sake of their safety. They were also grateful for the help of local volunteers who had offered to provide protection. The first unit to arrive was Company A from Los Angeles County. Company A consisted of men who had volunteered to serve in Arizona during the Mexican-American War. After arriving in Calexico, these men drilled and trained with other units until they were ready to deploy into Mexico City as part of General Emiliano Zapata’s army against dictator Antonio López de Santa Anna. When war broke out, Company A was called back home and did not participate in any combat actions. However, Company B from San Bernardino County did fight in battle against Mexican forces near Pueblo del Buen Ayala on October 16, 1879. After this victory, many soldiers from both companies decided that it was time for them to join together and form a battalion known as “Los Angeles Battalion” which would be commanded by Captain Higginson from Los Angeles County . It should be noted that at this point there were no military schools available for recruits so officers had to learn howto lead troops by example instead . Despite this handicap however; Captain Higginson quickly reformed his battalion into two Companies: “Alameda Battalion” under Captain John Smeaton (who later became Mayor of San Bernardino) and then finally “Calexico Battalion” under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong (the future Governor of California). This battalion eventually became known as simply “National Guard Infantry” or NGI for short after its inception . In 1886 President Grover Cleveland ordered all states except Nebraska add their own National Guards regiments , making NGIs one regiment per state plus Washington D .C . Assembling all these different Regimentations gave rise to confusion when asked about Who Commands What In case Of Emergencies where confused Officers might say Army or Navy etc.–In reality each Regiment Commander reported directly To The Secretary Of War With Respect To Their Own Regimental Commanding Officer

In the early 1800s, Calexico was a small farming town in California. The town was founded in 1847 by José Calexico and his wife Maria de la Concepción. The couple named their new town after the Mexican state of Coahuila, which they had visited while on vacation. The town quickly grew and soon became a popular spot for farmers to sell their goods from their fields. In 1854, the first post office was established in Calexico. By 1865, the population of thetown had reached 1,500 people. In 1898, Calexico was ceded to Mexico by President Grover Cleveland as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of Mexico's efforts to re-establish itself after losing its independence during the Mexican Revolution (1810-1821), Coahuila was given to Mexico as part of that treaty. However, because Americans were still allowed to live in Coahuila at that time, many Coahuilans decided to stay and fight for Mexico against America. After World War II ended, most Mexicans who remained in California moved back into their home state while some returned home permanently. But since then (1946 - present), most residents have returned to California or elsewhere in the United States
