Calexico is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Situated on the Central Coast of Southern California, it has been called "the Venice of the West" and its history reflects that designation. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Calexico were Spanish Franciscan missionaries who came ashore from Mission Santa Ana del Pacifico on October 25, 1769. They named the area after Captain Manuel Nieto's ship La Cali (1748), which had been lost at sea off Baja California in 1768. A military post established by Mexico City Governor José Joaquín de Arce was located at what is now Point Conchos between 1834 and 1836 and became known as Presidio de la Bahía de Los Angeles; it was abandoned in 1846 because of an insurrection by Mexican soldiers against their civilian governor. In 1851, gold was discovered near Calexico and soon began to be mined here. In 1860s cattle drives brought settlers here to ranchland that still stands today including parts of what is now downtown Calexico. By 1880 there were over 1,000 people living here along with small shops and a few hotels. The city started taking form when many residents bought land east of First Street which extended into Corona Heights; this land later became part of downtown Calexico when it was annexed into the city in 1912. During World War II Japanese troops burned down much of downtown including most of the Post Office Building before being driven out by American forces; however some buildings such as a warehouse remained standing until 1967 when they were destroyed by fire caused by an old oil capacitor manufacturing plant next door One interesting tidbit about postwar years relates to how newspapers changed hands: The Daily News went from being published by Hearst Corporation until 1951 before moving back under Hearst control until 1975; then Tribune Newspapers took it over until 2003-2004 before finally selling it back to Hearst Corporation again In recent years%, social media has played an important role in keeping citizens connected while businesses shuttered during tough economic times - witness current events such as vandalism or arson targeting businesses just blocks away from downtown during holiday seasons
