In the early 1800s, California City was a small farming community located in what is now Kern County, California. The town was founded by Yaqui Indians and was named after Captain James F. Watt of the United States Navy. In 1847, Captain Watt donated land to the Town of California City for the purpose of creating a military garrison and airfield. The first airfield in California City was built on what is now North Main Street. The Air Force Base Museum in nearby Diamond Bar contains an exhibit about this history. Air Force deployments to California City began during World War II, when the Air Forces activated General Electric's "A-24 Liberator" bomber squadron at General Electric's Ralston Aeronautical Laboratories in CalifornCity. This squadron flew Douglas A-20 Havoc fighters and Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses from then until 1945. Other USAF units stationed at Californial City included the 9th Bombardment Wing (based at Davis-Monthan AFB) which operated B-29s; IX Bomber Command's "Hercules" strategic bombers; VIII Fighter Command's "Wildcat" fighter aircraft; XX Bomber Command's "Panther" bombers; and XVIII Tactical Air Command's Lockheed P-38 Lightning pilots flying Republic P-47 Thunderbolts from Fairchild AFB, Hawaii). The base operations area around CAIC consisted of 8 million square feet (720,000 m2), including 4 million square feet (120,000 m2) of runways and taxiways with a population size of over 10,000 people during World War II. Aircraft production facilities were also located at CAIC: General Electric Aviation Company produced more than 2200 aircraft types during World War II here including bombers such as the Boeing B-17G/L ; Lockheed L3C4E Communications Aircraft Directorate manufactured radar equipment such as AN/APQD(V)7N1 radars for use by Army Ground Forces units across America; Raytheon Corporation manufactured ordnance for both American and Japanese forces using their new YF6U models; Westinghouse Electric Company produced generators for use by both American and Japanese troops throughout World War II The heavy bomber force usedCAIC during World War II included: Boeing 707–412 airplanes delivering bombs from Clark Field near Stockton to Japan’s Honshū city Boeing 727–211 transports carrying airstrikes against targets in Burma Lockheed P-39E Thunderbolt fighter planes engaging Allied forces over Iwo Jima After World War II ended there remained an active USAAF presence until 1949 when all combat duties were transferred to Marine Corps command
The United States Air Force (USAF) deployed a gift to the people of Afghanistan in late 2014. The gift was an air force combat helicopter, named "Clint Eastwood" after the American actor and director who has been known for his roles in films such as "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Godfather". The helicopter was donated by Boeing Company and is used by the USAF's 235th Rescue Wing. California City is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 127 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the area now known as San Diego since 1821. In 1865, when it was included within modern-day San Diego County, California City's population reached 25 thousand residents and its downtown business district had become one of the largest in southern San Diego County. After annexation into Imperial County in 1907, however, industrial development slowed and social unrest increased until World War II ended with its abrupt termination when fire destroyed most downtown businesses including much of the municipal water supply system (). In recent years there have been efforts to gentrify much of downtown while preserving some historic buildings; however these have met with mixed results due to resistance from some local businesses that see themselves as being loss leaders because they are not directly impacted by gentrification (). Today many people who call California City home commute into DowntownSanDiego or nearby areas for work or pleasure activities such as shopping or dining; this pattern has continued well into the 21st century despite numerous attempts by developers to change this once vibrant commercial center into an unaffordable housing project (). Despite these challenges though%, many residents continue their long traditions of community involvement through politics and philanthropy both inside and outside their hometowns

The area that is now California City was first settled in 1848 by the party of four men, led by John H kitsap and named after Captain Cook's ill-fated voyage to America. The site was chosen because it had an ideal location for a mission station, as it was close to two major rivers, the Sacramento and San Joaquin. In 1850, the Mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded on what is now Calle Real Street. A year later, Indian Chief Manuel Nieto built a rancho on what is now First Street. Mexican land grants were given to various families who arrived in California during the Gold Rush era. In 1851, Don Miguel De la Madrid acquired 640 acres (247 hectares) of Rancho Rinconada from José Antonio García de la Rosa y Aguilar for $1,500. In 1852–1853, General Antonio Nunez fought in Mexico against Maximilian I of Mexico and his army under Juan Bautista Alvarado. After Mexican independence was granted in 1861, American soldiers entered California and began occupying parts of southern California with the goal of seizing control of gold mines located there. On July 24th 1861—the day before American annexation of Arizona— Californios met at Presidio del Norte to declare their separate statehood from Mexico. On November 1st 1861 Governor Pío Pico signed into law Resolution No.–3 which proposed that Chihuahua become part of new California while Sonora remained with Mexico until its own admission into Confederation in 1912; however Chihuahua did not ratify this resolution until 1912 It should be noted that there were no boundaries between what would become Los Angeles County and Ventura County until 1893 when they were merged into one county
