California City is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George Hearst. The first coffee shop opened in the town square on January 17th of that year. The coffee industry took off in California City after World War II because of the growth of military bases and the need for fuel for their cars. By the early 1960s, coffee shops had started to proliferate throughout the town and within a few years it had become one of the most significant coffee communities in Southern California. In 1988, California City became an official city after being annexed by San Bernardino. Today, California City is known for its artisanal coffees and its historical significance as a center for coffee culture in Southern California.

He quickly realized that he could make better coffee with less water and more flavor by blending different kinds of beans together. In 1907, he opened Brown Coffee & Tea in downtown Seattle and began selling his Columbian Blend as well as other specialty coffees such as French Press, Kona Coffee, and Robusta. His success bred more innovation within the industry - in 1912, Brown introduced a vacuum packaging system which allowed him to sell his products direct to consumers instead of through mass merchants like Safeway.
