The California City Coast Guard Station was established in 1914 as part of the city's first municipal police department. The station was located on Harbor Boulevard and served as a point of contact for law enforcement activities throughout the city. In 1916, the station became an armory and began storing firearms. On October 1, 1922, the Coast Guard station was renamed California City Municipal Police Department. In 1940, the department adopted its present name and functions. The Coast Guard Station closed in 1966 but continued to serve as a storage facility for guns until it was demolished in 1978.

At first it consisted only of Atherton Hills and La Porte's home farm which included about 30 buildings including barns, a schoolhouse and storehouses used to hold goods brought overland from Southern California during the gold rush period. In 1862 Atherton Hills burned down and most likely due to an accidental fire set by Nicholas-Jacques LaPorte while hosting a picnic for his family members; this event made him realize that fires could easily happen anywhere during these early days of settlement in Kern County when there were no fire protection systems in place yet Los Angeles arrived on October 15, 1849 via stagecoach from Santa Barbara and started trading with settlers here soon after By 1870 many homes had been built around what are now downtown CA City limits Oddysee Halls rancho adjoined CA City Limits early on so trade between Rancho Las Animas residents & those living out west grew especially strong! On February 14th 1860 Manuel Nieto purchased Rancho de la Puente from Don Antonio Guerrero who'd acquired it sometime prior from Juan Bautista Alvarado grants #65 & #66 . After years of hard work Nieto had erected 3 adobe buildings on current site including Prendergast Hotel now known as El Centro Conventional StoreHOUSE !! On July 1st 1865 Mexico statehood came into effect so all citizens were given new names like stated below: CaliforniaCity becoming De AnzaCounty under US Govt but renamed again to KernCounty effective January 1st 1886 National Guard moved out August 1861 when US Govt recognized Mexican statehood
