California City is a small city located in the Mojave Desert, approximately 100 miles east of Las Vegas. The population was 7,514 as of the 2010 census. The first permanent settlers in California City were Mexicans who arrived in 1847. The town was rebuilt and renamed for Napoleon Bonaparte after his victory at Marengo in Italy on July 14th, 1804. Californian businessman George Hearst began developing adjacent land around 1910 into one of Nevada's most prestigious areas for gambling and real estate development. By 1914, Hearst had built more than 1,000 houses and other structures in what is now called "Hearst Heights." He also founded Hollywood Hills Country Club (now known as Ascot Manor) in 1915 on his own private property just outside of California City limits. Hearst's contributions helped make California City one of America's leading summer resorts for residents seeking rest and relaxation during World War I; he also funded a number of civic projects that improved public sanitation facilities, fire prevention measures, libraries and hospitals within Californian City boundaries.
