California City is located in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded on December 24, 1853 by the joint efforts of three American companies: the Pacific Railroad Company, the North Western Railway Company and Jesse L. Reno. The company name was changed to California City on February 17, 1854. In 1870, California City had a population of 1,500 and became an important railway center for Southern California. In 1901 it lost its status as a city but retains its importance as a commercial and industrial center today.
The first permanent settler in California City was James Cook, who arrived in 1769. Cook's claim to the land was disputed by other early explorers, and it wasn't until 1846 that the U.S. Mexican War ended with Mexico ceding California City to America. During Mexican rule, the area was known as Rancho San Francisco de Asis y Los Angeles. In 1848, American Commodore John C. Bremer laid claim to part of Rancho Santa Susana and sold it to Gideon Welles for $5,000. Welles built a cabin on what is now First Street and called his property "Bremer's Fort." In 1851, he sold the fort to Captain George Sutter for $10,000 plus an annual rent of $1,200. Sutter named the new town after himself—California City—and began building a small brick courthouse and jail on Second Street near today's post office.
