California City is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1887 by James W. Marshall and John D. Rockefeller as a small citrus town on the banks of the Colorado River. The town rapidly grew into a major coffee center during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location at the mouth of three large rivers, its accessibility to railroad lines, and its strategic position for shipping beans from Ethiopia to Europe. The first coffee bean grown in California City was an Ethiopian cultivar called Elagriffe that was picked by John A. Roebuck on his farm near present-day Interstate 5 and Fillmore Street in 1886. At that time, coffee beans were still typically shipped via sea from Africa aboard vessels like HMS Beagle or USS Dolphin. In 1898, American forces captured Elagriffe while it was being unloaded at Long Beach Naval Shipyard, which led to America's first commercial Coffee Export Agreement with Ethiopia. The agreement allowed American companies such as Jardine & Matheson and UnitedPRESbyterian Tobacco Company to purchase Ethiopian beans direct from Emperor Menelik II for export purposes. During World War II, coffee beans produced in California City were used to make docosomoacs (a type of coffee drink), chocolates, cigarettes, and other products for the war effort. After the war ended, many of these production facilities closed down or were converted into residential properties; however, some continued operations until the early 1990s. The City of California City is a city located in Kern County, California. The population was 17,544 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Riverside-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Kern County was made by prospectors looking for gold in 1849. They named their new find "California City" after the state of California. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of over 10,000 people. Avenues such as State Street and Sixth Street were built to accommodate this influx of people and businesses. In 1872, the name was changed to honor Ulysses S. Grant, then President of the United States and an old friend of miners in Central Valley who had financed his campaigns for office. In 1892, it became one of twelve cities in California to receive a telegraph line from Los Angeles through downtown San Bernardino to scattered towns across Kern County (the others being Big Bear Lake, Bakersfield, Chico, Claremont Junction and Fontana).
