The Marine Corps has been present in California City since 1846. The first Marines were stationed here in 1849 during the Mexican-American War. In 1895, the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing the city as a naval station and ordered the construction of a lighthouse to commemorate this event. The Light House was completed in 1902 and is still standing today. In 1951, California City became an anchorage for marines deployed to Southeast Asia during the Korean War. After that deployment ended, marines returned home and remained here until 1971 when they deployed again to Vietnam. This time, they served as part of Operation Market Time. Since then, marines have deployments every two years or so, sometimes staying longer depending on events happening in our country or abroad. However, there has never been any permanent Marine Corps base located in California City – which is probably because it’s not needed anymore and we can do things like send people here more easily by deploying them once every few years instead of every two years or so!

California City is located in Fresno County, California. The city was founded in 1852 by George A. Pritchard and named for the Spanish town of Californias that was established on the same site in 1769. With a population of around 50,000 in 1870, California City grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of two major wagon routes and its strategic position as the gateway to Tulare County. By 1880, it had emerged as one of the most important towns in Fresno County and boasted a flour mill, sawmill, hotel, post office, and other commercial amenities. In 1892 it lost its status as an agricultural center when a new railroad bypassed it; but despite this fate, California City continued to grow until World War II when it fell victim to military depredations committed by local troops. Today little remains of either its original architecture or population; but because of its history and role within Fresno County during various periods of growth and decline, California City has retained a significant sense of community identity that has helped keep it afloat over time. As an exceptional example of Southeastern Californian small town development on a large scale (fewer than 10K residents), California City offers visitors something uniqueto explore while also providing valuable insight into how regional patterns develop over time.
When the United States Marine Corps was activated in 1802, it was one of the most recent and diverse organizations on American soil. At that time, Marines were not considered a full-time military unit like the Army or Navy. In fact, they were considered discharged soldiers who had served their term of enlistment and then became civilians for a certain amount of time before rejoining the Marines. The first Marines came to America from France in 1798 during the War of 1812. The war led to an increase in Marine units and also increased funding for the Marine Corps. On October 20th, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln authorized Major General John A. Logan to organize a Marine Corps Regiment with 10 companies strength under command of a Lieutenant Colonel William Covington. This regiment eventually became known as Company D, 3rd Battalion (Marine) Infantry Regiment at Quantico Island on April 1st 1862 when it was transferred from New York Harbor to Virginia Beach after being mustered in as part of Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. On July 24th 1865, three days after Union general Ulysses S. Grant’s surrender at Appomattox Court House, Company D surrendered with it among other units at Norfolk Naval Shipyard after having fought throughout Virginia and Maryland during the war including several engagements near Gettysburg where more than 4500 men died including many Marines. Aftermath: Many veterans received dishonorable discharges or no discharge at all because they had enlisted while serving without proper training or equipment which ultimately caused them great pain and inconvenience during their long retirement years following World War II

In 1847, the Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. California was acquired by Mexico as part of the treaty and became part of the United States in 1848. The new nation organized its territory into provinces, and Californios began to arrive in large numbers. In 1850, Los Angeles County was established and California City was one of its first settlements.
