It wasn't until 1828 that another group of Europeans founded a rancho at what is now Fillmore Avenue east of US Route 66. named Rancho Laguna de la Purísima Concepción (Rancho La Purísima Concepción). After some years of operation, this group sold their holdings to ranchers from Mexico who began setting up homes there in 1830. In 1833 Mexican land grants were created covering much of present-day San Bernardino County including parts of what became California City; these areas are now part of Menifee Village development southwest of downtown San Bernardino. US Route 66 followed the Santa Ana River north from Fillmore until it reached Redlands Boulevard where it turned east towards Ontario before continuing its course through today's Menifee Village development and then ending near Calvary Chapel Methodist Church northwest of downtown San Bernardino
