California City is located in Kern County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,951. The city is named after the Spanish word "californio" meaning "American land". California City was founded on October 29, 1853 by Mormon pioneers who had traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois. The town was initially called Fillmore and changed its name to California City in honor of Governor George C. Marshall of Virginia. In 1868 Californian entrepreneur James Fenton opened what is now known as Fenton's Saloon at Seventh and Grant Streets in what is now California City. This saloon became a popular stop for travelers on their way to Gold Rush mines in nearby San Francisco. In 1870 Fenton built a larger building at Ninth and Grant Streets which served as the first Post Office in California City. The early days of California City were tough with only one store open per day and no electricity or water available until 1901 when an electric company arrived and started bringing power to the area via underground cables run by horse-drawn wagons. The first chapel was dedicated on July 4th, 1980 by then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger with Commodore John Slessor officiating as honorary president. Since its dedication, The Chapel of The Sea has been used by more than 12 million military members and their families who have visited it during deployments around the world. The first European to live in what is now California City was Juan Bautista de Anza on January 14, 1769. In 1867, George Hearst purchased Rancho Sinaloa from Don José Lopez y Costilla and began to build a ranch house here. By 1887, he had developed much of what is now California City into a thriving town with central business district and several blocks of handsome brick buildings which remain today as one of the most intact examples of Victorian architecture in the Western United States. In response to increasing demand for water rights from mining operations near Kern River (now known as Mono Lake), local officials negotiated new land grants from the Mexican government in exchange for giving up water rights within their own limits. This led to development of some of today's most important commercial areas including North State Boulevard, Interstate 805 and First Street east of town center (the old Ural Highway). Californial City experienced its heyday during World War II when it became one of over 100 American towns or cities designated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as " dumps." In 1942, parts of California City were bombed by Japanese forces during World War II as part of Operation Downfall; only two buildings remaining standing today are those in downtown CalifoncilCity and Myers-Reeves High School auditorium which both sustained major damage but remain operable with limited use due to fire protection features unique to these structures at this time).
